An Effort To Be Happier!

The key to being happier starts by being good to yourself. Sounds pretty self-evident right? But too often we skip this very crucial step. I myself skip it many a time! I often try to make myself happy by chasing ever-higher goals or holding myself to ever-greater standards of perfection (as seen on Instagram lol).

I go about my life day to day and I noticed that there was once crucial thing missing … and it was indeed happiness. I have been so caught up in my working schedule and other petty things like housework and catching up on Netflix TV shows that I totally forgot to be happy. I was in zombie mode that’s for sure, I was sad, and just content really … I needed a push to get me back on track to happiness.

I’ve read that the happiest people go out of their way to treat themselves right and they do something nice for themselves each day. They set appropriate boundaries and take care of themselves by saying no to things when they need to. This is something I have been trying to do lately and it has really turned things around for me. I indulge in a nice bath and glass of wine once a week now as nice way to unwind after a stressful shift at work. On my days off, I try to something fun and spontaneous as a way to forget about whatever may be stressing me out at the current moment in time. I buy myself nice things as a reward for my hard work. I continue to design and study marketing to help get me closer to my dream of having a clothing line. Keeping this commitment will motivate me to take better care of myself and go after my dreams. It’s worth a shot anyway right?

I challenge everyone this coming month to do something for yourself each day big or small to remind you on a daily basis to treat yourself with the loving kindness you deserve! Don’t get too caught up in the day to day routine! Take time to stop and breathe, prioritise your health and listen to yourself. Be spontaneous! Go to the beach. Go have a nice coffee. Have some retail therapy. Get creative!

Soo Joo Park (28) is a well-known model who made her modelling debut back in 2013. Soo Joo was born in Seoul, South Korea, and grew up there until she was 10. Her family then moved to California. Interestingly, modelling was an accidental career for Park. She studied architecture and shortly after graduating, was scouted to start modelling. Living in San Francisco, she had a full-time job doing graphic design for a start-up web company. One fateful weekend, she was shopping in a vintage store and was discovered, being asked if she was interested in modelling, her answer: sure, why not?

Soo Joo’s career took off after she met renowned stylist Carine Roitfeld and shot her for her CR Fashion Book. She was then recommended to designers among the likes of Karl Lagerfeld and Tom Ford. After her encounter with Lagerfeld, it wasn’t long before she was walking the Chanel Spring 2013 Haute Couture show at the Grand Palais in Paris. It proved to be the turning point in her career as she walked for everyone from Fendi to Lanvin since.

In an interview, Park discussed how she doesn’t see herself as an Asian model and that part of the reason she bleached her hair was so that wouldn’t be type-casted as an Asian model by the industry or designers. She is still an unmistakeable presence in the fashion industry and will continue to be with her eclectic personality. Soo Joo has a cool, 80’s, rebellious style and a VERY addictive Instagram feed! Finding Your Personal Style

I was never really into fashion growing up, but as time went on I started to learn that your style quite easily becomes an identity and a perfect means for you to express yourself. I myself am still trying to find my personal style, for me and it’s mainly trial and error. I will see something I love online, then I will go try it on in store and I either LOVE it or HATE it (or I can’t afford it). That’s just the fun of fashion, finding things that work for you and ruling out those pieces that don’t. Finding and refining your personal style can be a real struggle. We’ve all been there at multiple times, as we look into our closet full of clothes and need something, yet we cannot seem to find something to wear. The STRUGGLE is REAL right?

So why is style important? Let me tell you! The impact of personal style goes far beyond making a good first impression; great style is also about approaching each day with confidence, and the ability to feel FAB in what you are wearing. Believe it or not, the right wardrobe can make a difference in that department. I’m going to share with you a few tips on how to get started in the ‘Personal Style’ department! You’re probably asking yourself “Why take fashion advice from Samuel, he is not a designer/celebrity stylist!” This is all true but I definitely I think I have the base knowledge to help someone kickstart their personal style, TRUST in ME!!!

Firstly, It’s important to get some inspiration!georgia-fowler-fashion-week-style-3.jpgGet out those VOGUE magazines, open up Instagram, look at what your favourite bloggers and celebrities are wearing. Create a vision board of all the things that you like and which you feel you identify with most! This is a great way to create a foundation for your personal style! But make sure you do your research and even try things on in person before making any big purchases, clothing pieces can vary in appearance!

Next, It’s important that clean up and clean out!organize.jpgThe best way to do this is to take a good, long look at your closet and the items of clothing you already own, and by long look I mean a day! Really think about it! You do not want to regret tossing that nice jacket or vintage jeans! Toss what you haven’t worn in the last year , but also think how these old pieces can be incorporated into your new-found personal style. Then you can start fresh and begin to rebuild and refine your wardrobe with a style that truly reflects where you are in your current life/career/situation.

We must shop SMARTER not HARDER!best-street-style-at-paris-fashion-week-springsummer-2014-17.jpgOne of the things I have recently learnt is that you don’t need astronomical amounts of money to have good style. Sure money helps, but it’s not a requirement. I was under the impression that you had to buy all the top designer brands! BUT NO! Experiment with the latest fashion trends the smart way by hunting for deals. I only ever splurge on staple pieces like leather goods, a great bag, a nice coat, etc. If you pay close attention to detail to the quality of clothing pieces you can tell which cheap clothing pieces will last and which pieces will not. Some of the cheapest clothing items I own have lasted years for!

When looking at your personal style, and what you want it be, it’s important to take your lifestyle and goals into consideration. The perfect wardrobe should not only represent your vision and creativity, but also be tailored to your lifestyle. Also, HAVE CONFIDENCE! If you have it, you can make anything look good! Finally, Trust yourself! Trust your gut, because something that makes you feel confident and fabulous will NEVER go out of style.
