The Balmain Army rallies together once again to conquer Paris Fashion Week, descending on the very opulent Garnier’s Opera House. The inspiration for the show and the collection derived from Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing’s visit to the parisian ballet when he was younger! Rousteing says it’s a dream come true to design for the ballet and showcase his collection in such a historic, iconic location.
The collection itself is probably Balmain’s most fashion-forward yet, featuring a handful of see-through, clear PVC skirts, coats and booties. The designer has managed to make the looks simultaneously dressy and effortless, with power suits and form-fitting dresses adorned with sequins and fringy details. While this is a fresh new fashion-forward look for the fashion house, the collection does stay true to it’s signature ‘Balmain’ style. As always, the Balmain Army featured a heavenly host of supermodels. To walk for Balmain is a top privilege for any model so the only the best of the best walked down the runway. Below are some of the looks worn by the industry’s top models, Including a few comebacks from models Karolina Kurkova and Magdalena Frackowiak who have been absent from fashion weeks for quite some time.
Once again, Karl Lagerfeld shows off his boundless imagination, transporting us to into a different universe for the reveal of his latest collection. Paris to be exact, quite literally.
Karl’s collection showcased the skills of the Chanel ateliers and the amazing craftspeople behind these incredible collections. The feather-makers, the embroiderers, the boot makers, the pleaters. All whose work brings Karl’s imagination and expressionist sketches to life.
Thick tweeds and a mostly dark palette; controlled compositions of feathers adorning sleeves and hems. Every look was topped off with a boater hat. Karl Lagerfeld is bringing the early 20th century hat back. The accessory was presented in a variety of tweeds, satin and leather.
Every model’s look featured an over-the-top rainbow eyeshadow, a bright and welcome contrast to the dark-hued collection. Which tied in nicely with the darker bold colour of the garments.
At the end of the show, Karl Lagerfeld received the highest honour of Paris. The city’s mayor Anne Hidalgo presented the designer with a Grand Vermeil medal, the highest distinction the city offers, for his work in the French capital.
There’s an interesting collision of cultures at play when it comes to Balmain’s spring-summer 2018 collection. Creative director Olivier tackles a western Americana theme but filters it through a French lens. The American flag dissolves into a sea of stripes and stars as the Balmain man embraces a season of predominantly black and white.
Graphic to say the least, this collection goes bold with Balmain’s signature embellishments. It features elongated tops and tees that come together with flamboyant jackets. Skinny jeans and ankle boots contribute to Balmain’s fashion-friendly uniform. There’s also a hint of fringe and a generous supply of studs which all reinforcing Olivier’s ‘Balmain Army’ appeal.
Here’s a look book containing some of my favourite pieces from the collection!
Kate (27) hails from Russia. Kate started out modelling in 2010 taking part in Miss Russia. Two years later she took part in Miss Russia 2012, where she was a top 10 finalist. This beauty hardly needs an introduction. She has dominated the catwalks, and appeared in every major magazine from ELLE to W Magazine and of course, Vogue. The fashion spotlight has certainly had its’ focus on Soo Joo Park.
Soo Joo Park (28) is a well-known model who made her modelling debut back in 2013. Soo Joo was born in Seoul, South Korea, and grew up there until she was 10. Her family then moved to California. Interestingly, modelling was an accidental career for Park. She studied architecture and shortly after graduating, was scouted to start modelling. Living in San Francisco, she had a full-time job doing graphic design for a start-up web company. One fateful weekend, she was shopping in a vintage store and was discovered, being asked if she was interested in modelling, her answer: sure, why not?
Soo Joo’s career took off after she met renowned stylist Carine Roitfeld and shot her for her CR Fashion Book. She was then recommended to designers among the likes of Karl Lagerfeld and Tom Ford. After her encounter with Lagerfeld, it wasn’t long before she was walking the Chanel Spring 2013 Haute Couture show at the Grand Palais in Paris. It proved to be the turning point in her career as she walked for everyone from Fendi to Lanvin since.
In an interview, Park discussed how she doesn’t see herself as an Asian model and that part of the reason she bleached her hair was so that wouldn’t be type-casted as an Asian model by the industry or designers. She is still an unmistakeable presence in the fashion industry and will continue to be with her eclectic personality. Soo Joo has a cool, 80’s, rebellious style and a VERYaddictive Instagram feed! You can follow her via her social media below!
Devon Windsor is probably one of the most fun models to follow on social media! Her Snapchat and Instagram stories are INCREDIBLE as she shows her uncensored and fast-paced lifestyle to followers! Devon (24) hails from St. Louis, Missouri. Devon was discovered by a local photographer in St. Louis while she was attending a bar-mitzvah. She launched her career in the 2014 spring season shows, after appearing in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show previously in 2013. Devon appeared in over 20 international collections including Christian Dior and Prada. Devon is represented by IMG Worldwide and is 5’11”.
Her first big show was for Prada in September 2013. During her fittings, her hair was dyed bleach blonde. She liked it and decided to keep it that way, which has become her signature look. The same year, she debuted in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and advertised for American fashion house Moschino. Throughout her career she has walked for a bevy of top designers including Alexander McQueen, Anna Sui, Bottega Veneta, Balmain, Calvin Klein, Carolina Herrera, Chanel, Dior, H&M, Herve Leger, Max Mara, Michael Kors, Jeremy Scott, Oscar De La Renta, Tommy Hilfiger and Tom Ford, JUST TO NAME A FEW.
Devon has appeared in numerous Victoria’s Secret Fashion Shows. She debuted in 2013 and has become a regular in the show each year since then! In 2015, Devon secured a ‘Fit Model’ position with the brand making her the reference model for the designers and artisans as they create the looks for the show. As a fit model, Devon has all the outfits constructed on her body, and they are later made custom couture to whichever model they assign the look too! So basically she gets to try on every look for each show! Dream job am I right?
When Devon isn’t modelling, she is an amateur chef! If you follow her snapchat you’ll quickly learn that this girl can EAT! She is always indulging in different cuisines at top notch restaurants all around the world! Devon loves to cook and bake in her spare time! She even competed on MasterChef against fellow super model Gigi Hadid! #SuperModelBattle
Read about my thoughts on Kim’s Parisian Nightmare!
Those of you who know me, know that I love the Kardashians and as many times I may be jealous of them or annoyed at how amazing their life is compared to mine, they are still my guilty pleasure and I love them dearly … even though I don’t know them … sounds awkward but you get the idea! Before I get into this I just want to say that I am in no way trying to criticise the situation or glorify the events that took place in any way. I am simply just detailing my thoughts on it.
Anyway as most of you know Kim was robbed at her apartment in Paris early on the morning of October 3rd, 2016. Kim vanished off all social media immediately after the unfortunate event took place (as you would) for months. Slowly as Kim started to re-appear on the social scene, more details about the robbery have come forward. ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ returned for a brand new season recently and this week’s episode detailed exactly what happened in Paris that night from none other than Kim herself. I won’t go into the details of what happened on here as it is a touchy subject and some people simply won’t want to read about all the details. I just want to give my opinion and say what I think about the whole ordeal.
Initially when I heard of the news, a few things came to my mind. At first I thought maybe it was a publicity stunt, because as you know that’s something celebrities do to boost their profile and receive a storm of media attention. But then I actually thought about it, why on earth would someone fake this? After hearing the details of what actually happened, I myself would never want to experience a situation like that nor would I want anyone else to go through what Kim went through that morning. I guess what gets me the most is that while she is this almost larger than life celebrity, she is still a mother, a wife, a sister and a daughter which rings true to all of us. Imagine if it happened to a loved one of yours? I imagine you would be heartbroken.
However, this unfortunate event that happened to Kim sends a very important message to not only other celebrities, but to regular people like us as this sort of thing can happen to anyone. Your social media presence can have detrimental effects if you aren’t careful and smart about it. It’s now known that the robbery took place as a result of those involved tailing Kim the whole time she was in Paris through her social media activity. They knew where she was and who she was with at all times as a result of all the social media updates on her many social media outlets such as ‘Snapchat’. I mean think about it, we pretty much document our lives through snapchat and it’s not hard at all to find out where someone is and what they are doing these days.
There’s no rules saying you can or can not open up your lives to others through social media. The choice is yours. We just need to remember when we do, people have the potential to gain insight into out lives which won’t always be a good thing. I hope you enjoyed reading this post and what I had to say! What are your thoughts on the situation?
