This beauty hardly needs an introduction. She has dominated the catwalks, and appeared in every major magazine from ELLE to W Magazine and of course, Vogue. The fashion spotlight has certainly had its’ focus on Soo Joo Park.
Soo Joo Park (28) is a well-known model who made her modelling debut back in 2013. Soo Joo was born in Seoul, South Korea, and grew up there until she was 10. Her family then moved to California. Interestingly, modelling was an accidental career for Park. She studied architecture and shortly after graduating, was scouted to start modelling. Living in San Francisco, she had a full-time job doing graphic design for a start-up web company. One fateful weekend, she was shopping in a vintage store and was discovered, being asked if she was interested in modelling, her answer: sure, why not?
Soo Joo’s career took off after she met renowned stylist Carine Roitfeld and shot her for her CR Fashion Book. She was then recommended to designers among the likes of Karl Lagerfeld and Tom Ford. After her encounter with Lagerfeld, it wasn’t long before she was walking the Chanel Spring 2013 Haute Couture show at the Grand Palais in Paris. It proved to be the turning point in her career as she walked for everyone from Fendi to Lanvin since.
In an interview, Park discussed how she doesn’t see herself as an Asian model and that part of the reason she bleached her hair was so that wouldn’t be type-casted as an Asian model by the industry or designers. She is still an unmistakeable presence in the fashion industry and will continue to be with her eclectic personality. Soo Joo has a cool, 80’s, rebellious style and a VERYaddictive Instagram feed! Here’s a look at the 2018 Louis Vuitton Cruise Collection, displayed in Kyoto, Japan!
Cruise fashion has always been about status. Conceived to service a luxury customer for whom every holiday demanded a flamboyant new wardrobe, the cruise concept has become an elite catwalk showdown between the world’s premier fashion houses.
The Louis Vuitton designer Nicolas Ghesquiere has staged each of his cruise shows at a ‘WOW’ architectural landmark. This time, the show was held at the entrance to the Miho Museum, where a metal tunnel emerges from a Japanese mountainside and runs across a suspension bridge.
Models paraded down the catwalk strung between mountains in sleek tailoring, graphic prints, short hemlines and dramatic makeup. And of course, Japanese elements were fused into the collection, from embroidered dragons to kimono-style belts. Overall, the collection featured plenty of strong angles, layered prints and fabrics and covetable accessories.
Max Mara is an Italian fashion house. It markets up-market ready-to-wear clothing. Max Mara is known for elegant outerwear and fur. Warm winter coats were the heart and soul of this collection, with many of the models draped in them. A trend persistent throughout the collection was the knit trim on the coats making some of the models almost look like teddy bears walking down the runway. This show hit the mark when it came to accessories, with mittens to go with each look that showcased a coat, as well as knit trimmed tote bags.
What I admire about Max Mara, is that they stick to what they do best, which is extravagant outerwear and luxurious furs, allowing them to produce a solid collection season after season. Supermodel Natasha Poly opened the show, followed by a bevy of supers and baby supers, including 19 year old hijab-wearing model Halima Aden, a first for the fashion house. Below are some of the looks to show the different colour themes throughout the collection, as well as the full show!
Halima Aden is changing the fashion game being the first Muslim model to wear a Hijab down the runway during Milan Fashion Week!
As time goes on, little by little, the fashion industry has progressed when it comes to featuring men and women of different races on the runway and in editorial campaigns. supermodels like Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks paved the way for women of colour in fashion, while Chinese supermodel Liu Wen paved the way for asian models. Now the likes of debutant model Halima Aden (19) is quite potentially paving the way for muslim women in fashion.
Halima walked in Kayne West’s Yeezy runway show wearing her hijab, and became one of the most talked about new faces. In an interview with Vogue.com she states “My goal is to send a message to Muslim women and young women everywhere that it’s okay to break stereotypes and be yourself,” she says. “Always stay true to who you are—barriers can and will be broken!” Halima continued to talk about how she has found a way to respect both her values and her desire for creative expression. She also said in the interview that the industry has been “so welcoming and accepting,” which warms my heart!
With her first runway show under her belt she is on her way to success. She made her Milan Fashion Week Debut walking in the Max Mara runway show (pictured above leading the finale) and has already been shot by renowned fashion photographer Mario Sorentti. “I must say, It’s pretty impressive to have your first ever editorial shot by one of the most iconic fashion photographers in the industry,” she says.
I wish nothing but the best for Halima, and I have no doubt she will change the game. Like she said, we all need to stay true to ourselves and who we are. It’s a message I most definitely try to live by day to day and all of you reading should as well!
